Crosby, C., Bieniak, K., & Tran, S.T. (2024, May 13). Anxiety and depression in pediatric migraine: Systematic review and meta-analysis with consideration of gender diversity. [Poster Presentation]. 2024 DePaul Psych Night, Chicago, IL, United States.

Abstract

Migraine is the second most disabling condition globally. Beyond physical pain, youth with migraine experience functional disability and psychological distress. The frequency of mental health conditions in pediatric migraine remains unknown despite correlations between psychological distress and pain. There is limited guidance regarding how care providers should screen for mental health conditions in this population.  Analyses in chronic pain research demonstrate some connection between gender identity and pain experience, but these studies tend to assess gender as a binary measure; however, it is important to explore how gender non-conformity relates to pediatric migraine. In this study, data from a larger systematic review and meta-analysis are utilized to assess the frequency of anxiety, depression, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and autism spectrum disorder within pediatric migraine samples. It is hypothesized that youth with migraine will experience these conditions frequently. Additionally, gender representation within this data is analyzed. It is hypothesized that most studies will not be including inclusive questions regarding gender, nor will they be reporting on inclusion of transgender and/or nonbinary individuals. Database searches were completed in 2022. Findings will have implications for providing appropriate mental health care in pediatric migraine and highlight how gender identity is currently represented in pediatric migraine research.
